I began using the middle-dark tone on the forehead of the portrait and smoothing to establish where middle tone values will be applied.
Now, all three tonal values are sufficiently established to begin applying the values:
Darkest Dark
Medium Dark
Lightest Dark
Darkest Flesh Tone
Medium Flesh Tone
Lightest Flesh Tone
 and lastly ...
